Most perfume is made to be found everywhere. Ours is made to be found.
Somewhere between Shanghai, Kyoto and Seoul, perfume is being written in a softer hand. It opens like steam rising from roasted oolong. It turns to gold, the way osmanthus does when autumn arrives overnight. It settles into rain on old stone, and into the last thread of smoke drifting from a temple courtyard after the doors have closed. Almost none of it has reached these shores.
Ninefold keeps only a few of these names, and keeps them close. We follow each scent from its first bright minutes to the quiet hour long after, when it has become skin: worn to dinner, carried out into the rain, still there as the evening ends. Only once we know how it ends do we let it begin again, with you.
There is no warehouse of a thousand bottles here. There is a short shelf, kept with care, where every bottle has a reason to be, and someone who will listen for the one you have been looking for.
In Chinese, nine is spoken jiǔ, the same sound as 久: to last. We took the name as an instruction.
A lasting scent is rarely the loudest in the room. It is the one that folds itself into a life: the same coat, the same teahouse, the same long winter, worn again and again until the memory and the scent become one thing. Nine folds, and then it is yours.
That is the only kind of perfume we wish to keep.

Uttori writes the small poetry of everyday China into perfume: osmanthus drifting over a city lane in autumn, oolong poured in a quiet teahouse, moss gathering in the corner of a garden wall. Its compositions are made with perfumers including Yann Vasnier, Véronique Nyberg and Nisrine Grillié, names behind some of the most admired houses in the world.
Ninefold is its authorised home in Australia. Every bottle arrives directly from the house, unhurried and unopened, as it left Shanghai.
